BACKFLOW & CROSS-CONNECTION

What is a cross-connection?

A cross-connection is a physical connection (a piping configuration) between the public drinking water system and anything else, including another water supply, that can allow pollutants or contaminates to backflow into the public water system.

What is backflow?

Backflow occurs when a reverse flow of contaminated water or other substances from a customer's water system flows back into the public drinking water system.

A backflow incident can seriously affect the quality and safety of our drinking water supply.  Some examples of possible cross connections include landscape sprinkler systems, and hose attachments for utility sinks, and hoses run to pools or watering troughs.

How can I prevent backflow?

Backflow prevention assemblies provide the public water system with protection against contamination or pollution by preventing backflow through cross-connections.

For more information on backflow prevention assemblies, call our office at (503) 842-4333.

Who manages the backflow devices within the Fairview Water District?

Fairview Water District has contracted with HydroCorp, a cross-connection control service for public water systems, through September of 2025. If you are required to have a backflow device they will be in contact with you regarding its management.
